What Are the Pros and Cons of the Renault Taliant?

Since its launch, the Renault Taliant has been a model on the radar of those looking for an affordable sedan. However, the specs on paper don’t always match up with the reality behind the wheel. By combining current user feedback from the 2024–2026 period with long-term experiences, I’ve put together a review that will make you feel like you’re actually driving this car. What are its pros and cons? Looking at classified ad sites right now, among the models listed for sale, the Renault Taliant is one of the top sellers. I’ve seen it rank in the top two.

Price and Performance Analysis from the User's Perspective

The first time you see the Renault Taliant, its modern lines and sleek headlight design will win you over. But as soon as you open the door and take a seat, you’ll immediately understand why the brand has kept this car so affordable. Here’s what we’ve gleaned from thousands of miles of user experience. So don’t be fooled by appearances—that’s exactly what we’re going to tell you here.

Is the 1.0-liter engine sufficient?

The common misconception that a 1.0-liter engine lacks power—a major concern for many users—has been largely dispelled by the Taliant’s Turbo (TCe) version. The engine pairs exceptionally well with the X-Tronic CVT transmission, delivering excellent agility in city driving. Smooth gear shifts, especially in stop-and-go traffic, provide a high level of comfort. Thanks to turbo assistance, the car doesn’t lose power on hills. However, if the car is fully loaded and the AC is on, you can feel the engine straining. The engine is sufficient for city driving, but on long trips—especially with the AC on—you’ll notice the car is struggling just by the engine noise.

Factory Data vs. Real-World Fuel Data

This is the most debated point. The 5–6-liter figures in the manufacturer’s data can seem a bit unrealistic in the real world. While it’s possible to get 7.5–8 liters during calm city driving, there are quite a few users who complain that this figure can rise to as high as 10 liters in heavy traffic and on short trips. It’s not impossible to get down to 5 liters on a long highway drive at a steady 90–100 km/h; however, as the vehicle accelerates, wind resistance and the small engine’s high RPMs rapidly increase fuel consumption. So, when you look at it, there isn’t much of a fuel efficiency difference compared to vehicles with larger engines.

One point Taliant users agree on is the poor quality of materials. The dashboard and door panels are made entirely of hard plastic. This can lead to “trim rattles” (clicking noises) after a while. Road and wind noise intrude into the cabin like uninvited guests once you exceed 100 km/h. Because the underbody insulation is weak, you can even hear the sound of stones hitting the wheels. The spacious rear legroom and massive 628-liter trunk are this car’s strongest points. It’s a true family-friendly vehicle.

Chronic Issues

There are some frustrating details that stand out on user forums and complaint platforms. Many users are plagued by the "SOS Malfunction" warning, which pops up out of the blue. While this is usually resolved via a software update, it can still be annoying at times. The lack of multimedia features—such as some trim levels coming with a phone holder instead of a display—disappoints tech enthusiasts. Workmanship details, such as exposed trunk springs or the absence of ventilation vents in the rear seats, are cost-driven shortcomings that users criticize the most. The service light and the accompanying engine malfunction light are truly chronic issues in these Renault models. Even the most minor malfunction causes the engine malfunction light to come on, along with the service light.

Should I Buy a Renault Taliant?

If you’re expecting soft-touch plastics, a quiet cabin, and premium comfort, the Taliant might not meet your expectations. But for me, what matters is a spacious trunk and low maintenance costs. I want to enjoy the convenience of an automatic transmission in the city, and I want spare parts to be readily available. If you’re looking for a car that sells quickly on the used market, the Taliant is one of the most sensible choices out there. A small tip: if your budget allows, definitely go for the Touch package and the turbocharged engine version. The Joy package and the naturally aspirated engine might start to feel underpowered after a while.

Our goal here is to provide you with information about the vehicle so that, if you decide to purchase it, you’ll be aware of its pros and cons. If you’ve decided to buy this vehicle, you’ll find its specifications in our article.
